The Online Citizen

The Online Citizen: Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of a forum organized by The Online Citizen on Thursday nightDr Tan Cheng Bock has said that if elected president, he will ask the government to shift its operations from the Istana grounds to another location.

He said this during the first political broadcast for candidates on television on Thursday night. Dr Tan said the Prime Minister's Office should not be housed in the same compound as the President's. Dr Tan said it is not an issue of cost but about looking at the bigger picture.

The forum was attended by all four presidential candidates and their reactions were mixed. Mr Tan Kin Lian said: "Normally I share views with him but not on this occasion. I see that there are advantages for the president and Prime Minister's Office to be close to each other because there's a need for regular consultations. We can still be independent but close to each other."

Mr Tan Jee Say said: "If it promotes the image of independence, separation, then why not? It's good. We must go and find out what was the reason the PMO was moved from City Hall to the Istana, I think back in the 1970s. What was the reason then? And maybe we can revisit the issue." Dr Tony Tan did not speak with Channel NewsAsia after the forum.
